Personal Rapid Transit  (PRT) system is a transport system with features of both individual and public transport. The system constitutes of 3-5 person pods moving on flyovers usually located 5-7 [m] above ground level. These pods are completely automated: on their own they choose the optimal route, avoid collisions, react to emergency situations. Another key feature of the PRT system is, that it is a “door to door” system. Many authors agree, that the creator of PRT concept is Don Fitcher. At present there are only three PRT systems, that in a limited scope were implemented: Ultra (Heathrow airport, UK), Vectus (National Park in Suncheon Bay, South Korea), 2getthere (Masdar, United Arab Emirates).


In the “Eco-Mobility” project the following tasks were carried out:


1) original mechanical structure of the podcar-track was developed. This structure takes into account running properties, ergonomic features, aerodynamic phenomenon etc;


2) original power supply and propulsion systems for the podcars was developed. The propulsion system uses linear motor with its active part located in the podcar. Power transmission to the podcar is wireless, also a supercapacitor was used to accumulate energy from braking of the vehicle;


3) human-podcar communication interface was developed. This interface allows choosing destination, altering the route and provides communication in emergency situations;


4) A hierarchic three-layer traffic control system was developed;


5) physical model in 1:4 scale of the track-podcar system was built;


6) unique PRT vehicle simulator was designed. The simulator allows designing the PRT track network;

 

7) full-scale model of PRT podcar was built.
